Full description

The Wadden Sea World Heritage Center (WEC) in Lauwersoog, in the province Groningen, is an upcoming interactive experience center dedicated to the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Scheduled to open on April 26, 2025, the WEC aims to inspire and educate visitors about the unique Wadden Sea ecosystem.

The center will feature interactive exhibits that delve into the formation and ecology of the Wadden Sea. Visitors can explore the Wadden Sea Experience to learn about the area’s origins and its intricate ecosystem. Additionally, the WEC will house the new facilities of the Seal Center Pieterburen, allowing guests to observe seal care and rehabilitation processes firsthand.

The center also offers opportunities for scientific research and education, providing insights into the delicate balance between human activity and nature in the region.
Designed by the Danish architectural firm Dorte Mandrup, the WEC is constructed primarily from wood, harmonizing with the surrounding Wadden Sea environment. The building’s design ensures panoramic views of the sea and the adjacent landscape, enhancing the visitor experience.

The WEC is in the harbor of Lauwersoog, offering a starting point for various activities such as seal-watching tours and mudflat hiking. It’s a place where visitors, researchers, and local communities come together to celebrate and preserve the unique Wadden Sea ecosystem. Here you will also enjoy a lunch.

A guide will be present to accompany you from Breda and can tell you all kinds of interesting facts about the Netherlands and especially about the north of the country.
It is possible to stay overnight in the province of Groningen if you wish.
